Chilean Writers and Political Leaders
Salvador Allende (1908 - 1973)
Leader of the Chilean Socialist Party and President of Chile 1970-1973. Allende believed that a "Chilean road to Socialism" could be charted using the instruments of Chilean parliamentary democracy. His government nationalized key industries, wining the enmity of Chile's bourgeoisie and the US, who overthrew him in a bloody coup.
Luis Vitale (1927 - 2010)
Historian and writer. Founding member of the Chilean MIR. Tortured and exiled by Pinochet. He worked with sections of the IV International while in exile in European and South American countries.
