The first edition of The Philosophy of History (1837 - E. Gans, ed.) was based primarily on lectures presented by Hegel in the winter of 1830-31. With the exception of certain parts of the Introduction, it was based solely on the notes of those attending the lectures. The material was later reworked by Hegel's son, Charles Hegel, who included material from lectures dating to 1822 and Hegel's own manuscripts.
