Advisory Committees in British Government
Political & Economic Planning
George Allen & Unwin, 25s
A fine opportunity has been lost. After pointing out rightly that the growth of Government in size and complexity has resulted in advisory committees becoming an essential – and unknown – factor in administration, the authors proceed to count, categorise and generalise in a lifeless, constitutionalist mode which only obscures their subject’s importance. There is no social or political analysis of committee members; no extended discussion of their influence; nor of their relations to interest groups like the commercial TV lobby; nor of their relations to parliament, or other sources of influence. This is no candidate for the Discovery of Britain library.
