Modern Times and the Hawaii Union of Socialists conducted successful and enjoyable benefits with our Labor Day picnic Sept. 4 and “Harlan County” film showing Sept. 10. Over 75 persons attended each benefit, and over $300 was grossed. A special collection for the Stearns Miners’ strike fund at the film showing brought in another $90. More important than funds were the spirit and content of the two events, mixing fun and socializing with socialist and workers’ education. The picnic lasted from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with volleyball, soccer and football, good food, and a long “short speech” summarizing Modern Times’ and HUS’ modest accomplishments over the past year.
Our sisters and brothers in the RCP rolled up their anti-revisionist caravan at the picnic site, distributed leaflets attacking China’s “revisionist” leadership, and “buzzed” with fervor among picnickers, informing them of the RCP’s views on China and inviting them to a coffee hour on China. The picnic organizers had not expected such a large contingent from the RCP nor the long loud speaker oration by its leader denouncing the new Chinese leadership—but then again, we should have.
