The Hawaii Union of Socialists got off to a good start last January. Its founding meeting last January drew more than 30 persons and included a slideshow by May Lee and Charlie Correa on the Chinatown situation. HUS voted to strongly support the PACE [People Against Chinatown Evictions – EROL] struggle in Chinatown. (PACE plans a big demonstration on Monday, March 13–watch for further details.) After hearing a report on the upcoming Constitutional Convention and the issues it poses to working people and progressive forces (a report which was continued at a later meeting on January 31), HUS voted to support a campaign around Con-Con, authorizing its committee to draft a basic program and initiate united front work toward fielding a progressive slate of candidates who stand for this basic program. Several HUS members and supporters have indicated their intention to run for Con-Con seats, and a few other progressive candidates have agreed to work with the HUS effort. A few campaigns are underway. (For a draft of the basic program, or to offer your kokua in any way, contact HUS Con-Con Committee chairman John Witeck, at 595-7362. Watch Modern Times for further details and articles.)

HUS also agreed to join with Modern Times, which perhaps as early as next March or April would become the publication of the Hawaii Union of Socialists, while maintaining its open door policy of encouraging differing socialist analyses on important questions and proposals.

The next HUS meeting is set for Friday, February 24, 7:30 pm at the Waikiki Aquarium Auditorium (past Queen’s Surf beach on Kalakaua). Setsu Okubo will show slides and comment on her recent trip to Cuba, and there’ll be more discussion on Con-Con.
